Today pediatric physical therapist Laurie Gombash is here to tell you about her ABC’s of Movement® activity cards and CD that helps kids learn letters and letter sounds through movement and music!
. . . . .
Hi, I’m Laurie! I’m a pediatric physical therapist who also has a Master’s degree in Education. I have a knack for creating fun, DIY motor games and activities that kids love!
In 2014, I took my passion of teaching kids to learn through movement and created the ABC’s of Movement® activity cards. These 26 activity cards help kids learn motor skills and the alphabet simultaneously.
Research shows that kids learn best through movement. By combining motor experiences with alphabet learning, we can help make literacy “click” through movement and play!
With my ABC’s of Movement® activity cards, each alphabet letter has a corresponding movement that relates to the letter. In addition to helping with the literacy connection, each movement also encourages developmental skills like bilateral coordination, strength, and balance.
There are so many ways to use the ABC’s of Movement® activity cards! Here are just a few examples:
- use them in an obstacle course
- combine them with magnetic alphabet letters
- spell names then combine the movements
- do relay races
- use them as a bean bag game
You can watch a video demonstration of the ABC’s of Movement® cards in action on my website.
I am excited to announce that I have now expanded my product line to include music!
I have just released a music CD to go along with the activity cards, called Move with Me and Learn the ABC’s™. This CD is a perfect addition to the activity cards. Each letter is given its own fun, catchy song with words that rhyme, or words that start with the same first sounds (alliterations).
For instance, D is for DUCK WALK. In the song, the words say, “The delicate ducks dive under the docks, they walk in pairs, and they do the duck walk”.
Kids naturally love music. Not only does the music help them learn their letters and letter sounds, it also encourages them to move their bodies to the rhythm of the music!
The ABC’s of Movement® music CD consists of 27 tracks. The first track is the theme song, followed by 26 alphabet tracks from A-Z. Every song is different and is based on cultural music styles from around the world. These short, peppy tunes vary from Jazz Shuffle to Folk Waltz to Italy-Barcarolle and more. This music CD is a perfect complement to the ABC’s of Movement® activity cards, or it can be used as a stand alone medium.
I believe music and movement is a win-win for kids everywhere.
So I’m excited to partner with Mama OT to give away a free copy of my new ABC’s of Movement® CD, in addition to my ABC’s of Movement® letter cards!
